Key Functionality Gaps When Moving to Planner

Planner supports simple teamwork, but it does not replace key Project Online capabilities used by PMOs and project managers.

What Planner Does Not Provide

  1. No portfolio dashboards
  2. Limited scheduling and dependencies
  3. No cost or budget tracking
  4. No governance workflows
  5. No custom fields or historical imports
Planner missing portfolio roll ups for Project Online migration.

No Portfolio Roll Ups

Planner provides no native way to view project portfolios or executive dashboards. PMOs must rebuild reporting using Power BI or external tools.

Planner missing advanced scheduling and task dependencies.

Limited Scheduling

Planner lacks dependencies, critical paths, resource leveling and advanced scheduling used for complex project plans.

Planner lacking built in cost tracking features.

No Cost or Budget Tracking

Planner does not support cost fields or budget management. Financial tracking must be recreated with Power Apps or another tool.

Planner lacking governance workflows and approval processes.

Missing Governance Workflows

Planner has no intake forms, stage gates or approval routines. These must be recreated using Power Apps or Power Automate.

Planner missing support for importing historical data and custom fields.

No Historical Data Import

Planner cannot import custom fields, legacy metadata or timesheet history from Project Online without external migration tools.

A Clear View of Planner Limitations

Use these gaps to decide whether your organisation needs Planner alone or a combination of Planner, the PMO Accelerator or an ISV solution.
